Day #16 – Thursday 22 January 2026

-Post by 2/C Evan Pierce

My day in Guatemala began, as always, with a 0600 wake-up call, followed by three cups of coffee. I feel bad for anyone who has not experienced the delight of Guatemalan coffee.  It lacks the bitterness and acidity of coffee I am used to. I did not know what I was missing. I fear I have reached coffee enlightenment, and there is no going back. I can never enjoy a harsh cup of Dunkin’ as I used to.

My group took the chicken bus to continue work at Santa Maria de Jesus. I really have a great group around me. Jon Isabelle is a hardworking, handy guy who excels in environments that require skilled labor.  Jon’s demeanor and work ethic propel our group toward excellence. Tommy Thayer, the once quiet kid, has really come into his own. Tommy might have said five words at the airport, but now he wears a smile everywhere, consistently making our group laugh. I can see Tommy’s confidence growing every day.  He is becoming a leader. Nick O’Brien (OB) is who he is – I’ve yet to find a person who does not think OB is a delight. OB is one of those special people who brings joy to everyone.  His energy is transcendent. I swear the guy could make world peace if he tried.

Upon arrival at Jardín de Amor School, we were greeted with hugs from the second-grade class. OB and I got to “teach” them yesterday; in reality, they just showered us with hugs and climbed on us like a jungle gym. For work today, we continued painting new classrooms.   It was hard and rewarding labor, but the most memorable part of our experience this work week has been the people of this school.  To end the workday, we shared a snack with Miguel, one of the construction leaders we have been working with. Miguel is a father of three and extremely hardworking. Miguel shared some personal stories from his upbringing, explaining what it was like to grow up in Santa María de Jesús.  Miguel has overcome a lot to provide for a wife and three kids. He is a remarkable man.

After work came one of my favorite parts of the day, tanning. Tanning was followed by Spanish class. My tutor Aracielle is the best. She is a mother of 4 hijos (boys). Today we talked about Lake Attilan, where we will be spending the weekend.  I also showed her videos of my best friends from home. We shared some great laughs. She could sense my excitement for the lake and let me leave 10 minutes early.

Once class ended, we had our daily debrief at 1630. I could feel a palpable excitement amongst my peers about our trip tomorrow.  We have had two weeks of vigorous work and are ready to relax.  After our meeting, I went to the gym, and had aguachiles for dinner.

This may be my last public blog, so I would like to address a few things in case you do not hear from me again. I LOVE GUATEMALA!! I am so happy here.  The people are so special. I feel so blessed to share this experience with 11 other outstanding peers. We truly have a special group, and I will cherish the memories I have made here for a lifetime. Lastly, Mom and Dad – thank you for giving me the opportunity to go on this trip. I am infinitely grateful and having the time of my life!
