Day #19 – Return from Lake Atitlán – Sunday 25 January 2026

Hello again, my name is Nick O’Brien (also known as OB), and I’m coming back on here to write my second blog of the trip. For the most part, today was a travel day, with some free time before our 3rd and final work week.

Just for a little background, this past weekend we were fortunate enough to take a trip up to Lake Atitlán for some much-needed relaxation. During this time, my classmates and I took advantage of many fun experiences, like taking a boat to the nearby towns of San Juan and San Marcos, swimming in the lake, and playing games at our hostel’s bar, including Twister and a costume party. Our hostel, La Iguana Perdida, was awesome. It was right on the water, with amazing views. We had to take a 10-minute boat ride to reach it. Overall, the weekend was a 10/10 and I want to thank CAPT Lennon and Prof. C (and of course Smitty) for bringing us up there.

But just like that, every good thing must come to an end, and it was time to go back to reality in Antigua. The ride back from Lake Atitlán to Antigua took about 3 hours, with some moderate traffic. We had to take back roads because the Pan American highway was closed, and our route took us through some very scenic landscapes in rural parts of the country.

The bus left around 1000, which gave us enough time to get back to Antigua around 1300. As Sheduer Sanders would say, “this was perfect timing,” as the Patriots were playing in the biggest game of their season at 1400 – the long-awaited AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos. As you may know already, THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS ARE HEADING TO THE SUPER BOWL. After a dogfight in the madness of the Colorado snow, the Patriots pull out a gritty 10-7 victory to book their ticket to Santa Clara. Cap and Prof, seven of my classmates, and I watched the game at great spot called Caoba Farms. Being the nice guy he always is, Cap bought us all pizzas to snack on while witnessing history as Drake Maye became the 8th second-year quarterback to make the Super Bowl.

Tonight was an early night, as I am tuckered out from the weekend and want to be rejuvenated for a great last week of work here.

If this is my last blog post for the trip, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for taking the time out of their busy schedules to read all of these. I am so beyond grateful to Captain Lennon for selecting me for this trip and wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. Thank you and Go Bucs! (AND GO PATS!!!).
