The day began early, with a 0600 wake-up call and breakfast in Tikal. After several long, adventure-filled days, the morning felt calm and procedural, one last breath of the jungle before a full day of travel. From Tikal, we boarded a bus to Flores, watching the dense green landscape slowly give way to more developed towns. Flores felt like a brief checkpoint between worlds, a reminder of how quickly environments can change in Guatemala.
We checked in at The Purpose Hostel, which immediately lived up to its name. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and after dropping our bags in the rooms, we met Tatiana, who gave us a tour of the hostel. The highlight was easily the rooftop—an incredible hangout spot with sweeping views of Antigua and the surrounding volcanoes. It felt like a place where many late-night conversations and memories would be made.

After settling in, we went to eat at Violeta’s restaurant, which was both comforting and delicious after a long travel day. Later, we regrouped and headed out to the store to grab a few necessities and withdraw some cash. From there, we explored Parque Central, the heart of Antigua. The city was alive—locals, travelers, music, and energy all blending together.
We wandered through the shops surrounding the park, and it felt like there were hundreds of them. Truly anything you can imagine, someone was selling—handmade textiles, jewelry, art, leather goods, and souvenirs of every kind. It was overwhelming in the best way, and a reminder of how deeply craftsmanship is woven into Guatemalan culture.
Dinner was a group favorite: traditional tacos that were absolutely amazing. Safe to say we’ll be back. The day wound down with everyone gathering on the hostel roof, sharing laughs, stories, and enjoying the cool evening air above the city. Eventually, one by one, we turned in for the night—tired, full, and content.
As we head into tomorrow, spirits remain high, and I’m especially looking forward to watching the Patriots game with the group. To borrow from Tom Brady: “You’re never as good as you think you are, and you’re never as bad as you think you are.” A good mindset for football—and for travel.
