Guatemala: Wednesday, May 8, 2024:

We went to breakfast at Violetta’s at 0700. Breakfast today was pancakes topped with apple and banana. Each group worked from 0800 to 1200 and then went to our Spanish lessons from1330 to 1630.

We broke up into our three groups and left for work right after breakfast. My group, group 1, set off in the chicken bus to San Antonio with our escort, Kayla. We worked on setting up the foundation for a new kitchen for the family we were helping. Group 2 continued their work painting at Brillo de Sol. Group 3 headed off to Santa Maria to finish the demo work on a classroom and also competed against the students in a game of soccer.

After work we headed to Violetta’s for lunch which consisted of pasta, chicken and some mixed vegetables. Spanish class today was very different than usual. We spent the first half of class with our teachers and the second half of class learning how to make tortillas from scratch. It was very interesting to learn the process behind making a traditional food that we have been eating with every meal.

After Spanish class we split into groups and went our separate ways. Shayla and John went with our escort Tania to a coffee farm and learned the ins and outs of how coffee is made and processed in Guatemala. Reece, DJ and I went to dinner with two of our Spanish instructors as a farewell and thank you to them for all of their help. After dinner, Grecia (Reece’s teacher) took us to the open air market to scope out some souvenirs and gifts for our friends and family. Jenny and Matilda went out for a traditional Guatemalan meal at Los 3 Tiempos.  Hasta Mañana!!!
