As our days in Guatemala wind down, we find ourselves scrambling to complete all of the activities we want to do. In our free time, eight of our fourteen group members went on a chocolate tour, where they learned the origins of chocolate and how it is made. They also got the opportunity to make chocolate for themselves. Others continued shopping to bring home presents to loved ones.
During the work day, the Brillo de Sol group continued rebuilding a shed. After completing the construction, the group was tasked with moving books, wood, and doors into the shed. They also built a screen door for a storage room and painted a wall and two doors.
At Santa Maria de Jesus, we continued demolishing the floor in preparation for the installation of new tiles. After we finished the floor work, we washed some of the school’s walls. During the 5th grade recess, we played an intense game of soccer. With our spirits high from yesterday’s win, we won another game by a score of 11 to 4. I can’t say I’m proud that we destroyed some 5th graders, but I am happy to take the win. Playing these games against the kids really shows how happy they are to have a little fun. It has made my experience in Guatemala even better.
Lastly, in San Antonio, the group mixed, spread, and leveled concrete, which was used for the flooring of an outside kitchen. This kitchen is being built to help an elderly couple. We concluded our 45 hours of Spanish lessons today at the Ixchel Spanish School. We gave our instructors presents to thank them for all their hard work.
Tomorrow is our last full day. ¡Hasta mañana!
