Day 12:Keiran Glover
Good evening all,
My name is Keiran Glover and I am from Savannah ,Georgia. I graduated from Benedictine Military High School. I am a Sophomore at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the International Maritime Business Major.
Today we started off with a great breakfast at our Hotel in Trang and then we headed off to our first port visit in this city. Chokchai Kantang Port a very small private port in Trang which was incorporated in 2010. During the visit, we learned that, it exports gypsum, granite and other minerals into neighboring ports and countries like Malaysia,Bangladesh etc. The port was constructed for only small ships with low draft requirements because of the depth of the Trang river, which connects to the Indian Ocean. It was interesting to see the differences between a massive port like Laem Chabang and the tiny Chokchai Kantang port in Thailand.
Our second port visit was Yusob International Kantang port, founded in 1999. This was a container port which sends containers to Penang, Malaysia. After arrival in Penang, the containers move to many countries around the world including China, South Korea and Russia. They mainly export rubber and minerals around the while they import corn, banana and fertilizer. Trang is well known for its rubber plantations. This port covers almost 500 acres which is the biggest port in Trang province. The biggest vessel authorized on this port is about 10,000 ton. This port gets support from the government marine department.
Despite it being a very important religious holiday in Thailand, both of these ports graciously accepted us with open arms and were quite eager to show and inform us about their operations. Here is a big Thank you to Chokchai Kantang Port as well as Yusob International Kantang port.
After these two informative experiences of the two ports we headed to the beach in a Thai long tail boat. We eventually anchored at a beautiful spot and started snorkeling.
It was a great experience and a lot of fun. Later, we went to an island and enjoyed the beautiful clear warm water and breathtaking views.
