Marine Engineering

The Marine Engineering (MENG) program prepares students for careers as licensed engineering officers in the United States Merchant Marine and for technical roles in shoreside industries such as power generation, shipbuilding, and energy systems just to name a few.

Cadets develop a strong foundation in mechanical and electrical engineering systems through a combination of classroom, laboratory, and experiential learning. This includes approximately 50 days of practical shipboard training each year, typically during the annual sea term aboard the NSMV Patriot State or on a commercial merchant ship assignment.

The program emphasizes hands-on learning, leadership development, and technical excellence. Cadets gain the knowledge and skills needed to operate and manage complex shipboard systems and are prepared to meet the highest standards of professional responsibility and safety.

To obtain a U.S. Coast Guard license as a Third Assistant Engineer – steam, motor, and gas turbine, unlimited horsepower – cadets must complete the academic program and pass the Coast Guard examination.
