Day 1 (1/11/2026)

Written by 4/C Miles Felcman

Today we woke up at 0430 to start our day, got dressed into our classroom blacks and met downstairs for some breakfast, we had PopTarts and apples. Our mentors told us how the day was going to go. We loaded into a bus and made our way to Boston Logan International Airport, arriving at 0635.

Group A Students

Everyone was given their boarding passes and went through TSA, the group made it to the terminal where we were graciously given priority boarding to be on the plane at around 0940 and we took off around 1020. After a long bumpy fight, we attempted to land at Charlotte Douglas International Jetport but it was too windy so we got redirected to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina. The plane was refueled and we headed back to Charlotte after roughly an hour of waiting.

Upon arrival to Charlotte, we were greeted by Dr.Cheek – who was driving a BucVan from Campus to Charlotte, and his friend Dylan, who had a U-Haul truck to carry all of our sea bags up to Black Mountain to our cabin. We all made it up and were greeted with a very good taco supper provided by our catering staff. The rest of the night was spent hanging out, watching the Pats, and getting to know new people. Dr. Cheek told us how our stay will be planned, working with FEMA, a tour of the town of Marshall, and the Asheville Fire Department visit coming up this week.
