Day #24 – Last day in Antigua – Friday 30 January 2026

Post by David Krise

Today marked the final chapter of this unforgettable journey. My day began like so many others here in Antigua —a 0620 wake-up call and a short walk to Violetta’s for breakfast. After discussing our plans for the day, we met our mentors outside and split off to our sites.

My group has spent the week supporting Jardín de Amor in Santa María de Jesús. As you may already know, it provides not only education but also much more – daily meals, healthcare support, hygiene education, and a safe place to grow for over 350 school-aged children.

This week, our main task was to repaint, or “prime” the exterior walls of the school so that in the future, the community can add bright, vibrant murals and colors. Once we finished, Kevin and I headed off to cut the watermelon we had bought earlier this morning, while Olivia and Ryan stayed behind to teach the kids how to say “hola” and “adiós” in English to the 2nd graders.

Once the fruit was ready, we gathered the students and asked each one a question before passing out the slices. They absolutely devoured every slice. When it was time to say goodbye, we climbed into the truck with CAPT Lennon, Prof. C, and Smitty for the ride back down the mountain to Antigua.

Back at Violetta’s, emotions were on full display. Hugs were shared, we had our final delicious meal at the tienda, and we took photos to remember our time together. The conversations, shared meals, and moments around the table revealed how much we had come to mean to one another, despite the language barrier.

With no Spanish class and no group meeting at 1630, we were given free time until curfew. Some of us headed to the gym for one final workout before the long travel day tomorrow, some shopped for last-minute gifts, some soaked up the sun for one last chance to fry before our return to winter, and others got haircuts at Antigua’s amazing barber shops.  By mid-evening, most were back at the hostel, packing and preparing for the early-morning departure.

As much as I look forward to seeing my friends and family, this trip has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve seen firsthand the impact that even a small amount of effort can have. Whether it was a child smiling when we arrived at a work site, an adult offering a hug, or the joyful chaos of schoolchildren, I realized how much good can come from simply showing up with care.

Our group of twelve has grown closer with every moment, supporting each other through a variety of challenges, including sickness and a physically demanding volcano hike. We have shared laughter, cherished moments, and come together as a team. This experience would not have been possible without the incredible support we have received from the people we have met in communities we have served and within the community we have built together.

Lastly, I wish to say thank you to my father. Your unwavering support has been my anchor, and I am honored to represent not just myself, but my last name.

Until next time,

David Krise
