Today we got to go to Marshall for our last day of volunteer work. I went to Trish’s studio to help with some of the smaller tasks she needed done. I had a few different tasks during the time we had at Trish’s today, my main task was painting a slab of wood white for something she was building to put in her studio. After I had painted several coats it was my turn to do some Press Print printing where I got hands-on experience with the process of making the prints and learning how the machine works. After printing I was tasked with watching Trish’s dog Greta, she was quite hard to entertain today and it was quite the challenge to to keep her from barking too much. The biggest task for the group as a whole today was having to take multiple buckets of lead contaminated Type to Biltmore Iron and Metal Works. After getting all of the Type to Biltmore Iron and Metal Works we went out for lunch at Juicy Lucy’s and my Chicken Gyro was amazing, definitely a great choice. After lunch we headed to
All Hands and Hearts for a tour, there we got to learn about what they do and more about their operations behind the scenes. Something I found interesting is how they mostly pay for all of their volunteers expenses like food, housing, and transportation (besides the plane ticket). After our tour at All Hands and Hearts we headed back to our cabin where we had dinner and then a talk with a social worker who is working with people affected by Hurricane Helene with housing. Personally I feel that this job is one of the more important ones for long term recovery because of the effects a disaster can have on someone, losing your home or experiencing it in general can be mentally draining and having someone who is able to guide you through the process of receiving aid can make a big difference.
